The Buffalo Mass Mob is heading to the city’s Saint Lawrence Church on Sunday, February 26, 2017 for noon Mass. This will be the twentieth Mass Mob the group has staged since it was founded in 2013 to help raise awareness of inner city churches and give the church a boost. The concept is simple. The group picks a church and asks the public to come en masse to worship on a selected Sunday. The events are almost entirely organized through social media.

In addition to bringing the Mass Mob to Saint Lawrence, the group is raising funds to help the parish meet its goal to replace the roof on the church building. The parish has been fundraising for over a year while the building has a blue tarp across to prevent leaks and damage. A GoFundMe page has been set up by Buffalo Mass Mob. The initial goal was to raise $500 before the date of Mass Mob XX, but that was reached in one day after effort launched. Now with over $3000 raised, the group is hoping to raise even more before February 26. Christopher Byrd of Buffalo Mass Mob says, “We were blown away when we met the goal quickly. Buffalo is such a giving and caring community. Our group decided to keep the effort going. Whatever we raise will go a long way to help the church get a new roof.”

The Saint Lawrence parish community is also happy for the support. “We are so excited that Mass Mob is coming here to help us out,” says Fr. Ronald Sajdak. “Seeing people outside the parish supporting the effort is a real affirmation, not only for our small parish community, but for all the work we’re doing in the community with all the ministries. It says that the church community, though we’re small in number, has tremendous value to the neighborhood and around.”

The Buffalo Mass Mob is also asking people coming to Mass Mob XX to bring a non perishable food item to donate to the parish’s Rev. Joseph F. Moreno Food Pantry. While anything is welcome, the pantry is especially in need of jelly, tea bags, salt and baked beans.

Saint Lawrence Church is located at 1520 East Delavan Ave, Buffalo, NY 14215.

Buffalo Mass Mob sets sights on raising funds for Saint Lawrence Church roof

Saint Lawrence Church in Buffalo has been trying to raise money to put a new roof on its church since 2016. The parish has raised about $25000 of its goal of $95000 to date. Right now, the church has a blue tarp covering most of the roof to protect the building. With the Buffalo Mass Mob coming to the church on Sunday, Febraury 26, 2017 for noon mass, our Mass Mob group wants to raise $500 towards helping put a new roof on Saint Lawrence before that date. This would be a nice way to  boost to the effort, Please contribute what you can.

A Photo Album & a Thank You for Buffalo Mass Mob XIX at St. Stan’s

Thank you, Buffalo. Mass Mob XIX at Saint Stanislaus Church on Buffalo’s east side was great. Without your support, Buffalo Mass Mob would not be able to do what it does. It was wonderful to come together at one of the city’s most historic churches. Saint Stanislaus is the cradle of Buffalo’s Polish community. To sit in its pews, you can’t help but to be struck by the church’s beauty and the history surrounding you. And to come together and worship like the forefathers and mothers of the parish did in the 1800s, it’s a sharing in the living breathing history of Saint Stanislaus.

Thank you, Father Mariusz Dymek and the Saint Stanislaus parish community for being wonderful hosts.

A special thank you to all the Polish community organizations that helped promote.

Here are photos taken by Buffalo Mass Mob’s Arthur Kogutowski from Sunday…they are beautiful.

The Buffalo Mass Mob is heading to Saint Stanislaus Church for Mass Mob XIX

The next Buffalo Mass Mob will take place on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at historic Saint Stanilaus Church in East Buffalo’s Polonia neighborhood.

Buffalo Mass Mob started in 2013 as way to draw attention to struggling Buffalo inner city churches. A mass mob is similar to a flash mob, but the idea centers around inviting people to come worship at a church organizers select. Each mass mob has brought hundreds of people to churches whose attendance has dipped over the years. Christopher Byrd, Buffalo Mass Mob co founder says, “The concept is simple. We want to showcase Buffalo’s historic churches, but we want the community to see them in their intended purpose. A lot of the city’s churches have fallen off people’s radar screens. This gives people who come to a mass mob an opportunity to share in the living and breathing history of a church and an understanding of how important they are to the cultural and historic fabric of Buffalo.”

Originated in Buffalo, the mass mob movement has garnered national and international attention. Buffalo Mass Mob has also inspired people in other cities to organize their own.

Saint Stanilaus Church, located at Peckham and Townsend Streets in Buffalo, was established as a parish in 1873 by Rev. Jan Pitass and the Society of Saint Stanislaus. The original church was a two-story, wood frame church that was built in 1874. That church was converted to a school shortly after the present-day church was completed in 1886. In 1904, the church’s parish was among the largest in the U.S. with close to 20,000 parishioners and nearly 2,000 children were enrolled in the school. The parish continues to serve Buffalo’s Polish community and Buffalo’s east side. It is often referred to as “The Mother Church of Polonia.”

Buffalo Mass Mob XIX will begin at 8:30 AM. The church will remain open after mass for people to take pictures and tour the church.
